A Random Metaphor...

Truth.

Truth is a lighted candle in a darkened room.

When handled properly, it provides illumination, enables clear vision, lights the way. It even offers warmth and comfort.

Try to hide the truth and one of two things will happen. Either the flame will erupt, burning the cover and everything nearby, or the flame will be extinguished entirely, leaving the room in utter darkness.

Truth is a powerful force, not to be toyed with.

Random question: why truth is so scary? It is one of the things that we are the quickest to run away from, hide, or leave behind. In your metaphor truth can also burn unintentionally when wielded carelessly.

Random movie quote inspired by the metaphor:

I close my eyes and an image floats beside me. The sweaty-toothed madman with a stare that pounds my brain. His hands reach out and choke me. And all the time he's mumbling. Mumbling Truth. Truth like a blanket that always leaves your feet cold. You push it, stretch it, it'll never be enough. You kick at it, beat it, it will never cover any of us. From the moment we enter crying to the moment we leave dying, it will cover just your head as you wail and cry and scream.

Wow! Your movie quote is a little disturbing. ;) I think, at least in part, that Truth is scary because it means leaving ourselves completely transparent and vulnerable-"naked" if you will. In this world that is a very scary thing. The thing is, tho, that hiding from the Truth just makes the revealing of Truth that much more painful. Obliterating the Truth in your life does not mean Truth doesn't exist; you've just cut yourself off from it.

Hi! Currently I am trying to keep myself awake at 2 a.m. because Aria is sick, so I'm going to comment again. With regards to the quote, it's the spontaneous poem that Todd comes up with in class during "Dead Poet's Society" (one of my all time favorite films). The "sweaty toothed madman" was actually a reaction to a portrait of Walt Whitman.

With regards to truth, I think one of the most frightening aspects is implication. The big capital "T" Truths that we struggle with are the ones that we can't just learn and go on with our lives. We are struck in the face by the "if, then" one-two punch. If A is true, then I have to do/be/change B. Otherwise we are the foolish man in James that sees our reflection and turns away forgetting what we look like. Truth isn't static. That's why the truth is also called a sword. It will cut, perhaps to wound perhaps to heal, but it won't leave things the same. When that cutting takes place I see the revelation that you refer to in your reply. The life altering power that we wield when facing the truth makes us pause. But like you said, it doesn't go away.

Another DPS quote (by way of Walt Whitman):

"That you are here; that life exists; and identity

That the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse.

That the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse.

What will your verse be?"

Now that quote I like! Tell Aria I (we) hope she gets well soon!
